INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE: CARD. POUPARD, "PEACE NEEDS LOVE AND MUTUAL TRUST"

” “Religions, "often accused of stirring hatred and causing violence", "far from being a problem are instead part of the longed-for solution to bring harmony and peace into society". It has been repeated today by cardinal Paul Poupard, president of the Papal Council for Inter-Religious dialogue and the Papal Council of Culture, at the opening session of the Inter-Religious Meeting which is in progress in Assisi, organised by Comunità di Sant’Egidio. Religions, he highlighted, "invite people to think and want peace, to bravely fight the ideologies that make men enemies: revolutionary fanaticism, class hatred, nationalist pride, racial intolerance, commercial selfishness, the individualism of hedonist people or groups who do not care for other people’s needs". "Just like a fragile and threatened child – he said -, peace needs lots of love. So one must give unfailing attention and work hard to change people’s mentality and attitudes and create a genuine culture of love-inspired peace. We certainly live at a dramatic time of the history of the world. So we have to join everyone’s intelligence, courage and sensitivity to increase the urge of love and peace in the world. We must rebuild mutual trust. Which cannot be earned by force or with nice words, one must deserve it with factual gestures and actions that take inspiration from love".” “
