The unity of Christians does not exist yet, but "we cannot surrender to dejection, even if there are quite a few missing steps yet, no matter how long". This was stated by the Spanish Bishops of the Bishops Commission for inter-confessional relations, in the message "Christ enlightens everybody", launched in the run-up to the forthcoming Week of Prayer for the Unity of Christians (18-25 January). "As disciples of Christ, we cannot go back, tempted by the security of a past without relations between the Churches", comment the Bishops, who mention that "all the major church communions" aim at recognising themselves as "sister Churches”. A special part of the message speaks of the ecumenical meeting of the European Churches in Sibiu (Romania): "We are perfectly certain that the III Ecumenical Assembly will help make us Christians get to know each other more and better, to face together the common challenge of our time: to make Christ keep enlightening the life of the countries that have experienced Him and in whose light have walked".
