EUROPE: EUROBAROMETER, "DISCRIMINATION STILL WIDESPREAD IN THE 27-MEMBER EU"

"Over one half of Europeans think more should be made to fight discrimination in their countries, and most interviewees think discrimination is widespread" in the old continent. Eurobarometer took a picture, for the start of the European year of Equal opportunities, of the attitude of the EU citizens in this area. The results of the survey were disclosed in Brussels today, along with the website of the Special Year and the schedule of the "Equality summit" due to take place in Berlin on 30th and 31st January. Vladimír Špidla, MEP for employment, social affairs and equal opportunities, stated: "The results of the survey clearly suggest that the level of discrimination remains high for Europeans, and they would like to see stricter measures adopted to fight prejudice, intolerance and inequality". The MEP confided that "2007, declared the European year of Equal opportunities for everyone, will trigger a lively debate on diversity, which will boost and improve the fight against discrimination".
