The leaders of the Catholic and Protestant Churches in Myanmar have written a joint appeal to general Than Shwe (the leader of the military junta, known as "No. 1") to ask him to find "a peaceful solution" to what is happening in the country. The appeal, signed on 28th September by the archbishop of Yangon Charles Bo, secretary of the Bishops Conference of Myanmar, and by the archbishop Samuel Mahn San Si Htay, president of the Council of the Churches of Myanmar (Mcc), and which has just been relayed by the local press, recalls that the congregations of both confessions have joined in prayer for "peace in the country" and that "all the Christian Churches and all Christians deeply wish it and are doing all they can to give their contribution". "All the people who live in Myanmar they state are very keen on their personal faith and live in agreement with the lessons of their beloved religion". "On the basis of the lessons of the religions about love, truth, justice, forgiveness and reconciliation and considering the current state of the country", write the two Christian leaders directly to general "No. 1", "we wish to appeal to you, that you may be so kind as to solve this case with paternal love and with a peaceful solution, so that there will be stability, peace and non violence, that are the people’s wish too".
