An appeal to "stop the brutal repression of the peaceful demonstrations" carried out by the Buddhist monks in Myanmar also comes, today, from the Office of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. "The violence with which these demonstrations have been repressed reads the appeal and the heavy number of killed civilians are some of the most outrageous of all times. Stifling the peaceful expression of a disagreement with such violence and with such disproportion is a blatant and massive attack against human rights". So far, comments the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, "appeals to moderation have been ignored; this proves the junta is ready to use the most disgusting means to retain power at all costs". Therefore we appeal to "the whole of the democratic forces of the country that fight for the establishment of democracy" and call the military junta to "take the opportunity to put an end to a brutal repression, to start negotiating with the political forces that are against the regime and society, and to lead a political transition towards democracy".
