SIR EUROPA: THE PRESIDENT OF THE EU PARLIAMENT POTTERING VISITS THE CATHEDRAL OF BUCHAREST (2)

The European Statement followed an ongoing protest from the Christian community of the country against the repeated refusals of the authorities to tackle the problem and the disconcerting delays with which the legal appeals were moving on. On July 10th, 15 months after the submission of the appeal by the archdiocese of Bucharest, the Court had ordered that the building should be suspended, but the businessmen over those 15 months had already brought the building virtually up to its final height. For the time, being work at the skyscraper has been stilled. With Pottering’s visit in Romania, "we hope justice will no longer follow the parallel ways of the Mafia-style illegality that it has pursued so far and that the area of the cathedral will be brought back to its pristine state. This battle means for us the commitment of the Church of Romania to the fight against corruption".
