Furthermore, in the salutation addressed to the president of CEI at the opening of the 45th Social Week, Benedict XVI pointed out that "the society of our time has to face numerous ethical and social emergencies, capable of undermining its stability and of seriously compromising its future". "The anthropological question, including respect for human life and attention for the family based on marriage between man and woman" is particularly present-day. "They are not just Catholic values and principles pointed out the Pope; – they are common human values to be protected and defended, such as justice, peace and the safeguard of creation". According to the Pope, work precariousness is also a serious problem, if it "does not allow the young to build up their families. In this case, the whole real and complete development of society is seriously compromised". Therefore, here is the invitation for the Italian Catholics (already addressed them in Verona) to react to "these challenges", without "neglecting any of the energies capable of paying contributions to the cultural and moral growth of Italy". The Social Weeks are particularly important. "They are a provident initiative which, in the future, too," may encourage the "formation and animation of christianly inspired citizens".
