According to José Barroso, president of the Commission, and José Socrates, Portuguese Premier as well as current president of the European Union Council, today’s three-party social summit "paves the way for a new collaboration between unions and entrepreneurs" allowing European economy "to face the challenges of globalization". "Now added the Head of the Executive, it is a matter of continuing this debate on a national level, so as to adapt flexisecurity to the different realities on which every country is based". The joint document submitted to the European Union by the social partners is a shared analysis of the employment and competitiveness situations. It also makes a few "recommendations" and "proposals" to the member States and the Union on the whole, also in relation to the future Reform Treaty, which will be discussed in late afternoon, during the Intergovernmental Conference of the heads of state and government of the 27 states meeting in the Portuguese capital.
