SIR EUROPE: EUROPEAN DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN HUMAN BEINGS; RECOMMENDATIONS BY CARITAS EUROPE

A few recommendations to the European governments are shown today by Caritas Europe, in a declaration during the first European Day against trafficking in human beings. Recalling that Caritas Europe coordinates also COATNET (Christian Organizations Against Trafficking), a network of 41 Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox organizations against trafficking in human beings, it also makes some proposals and "priority actions": letting the European Day and the World Day coincide, "because trafficking in human beings is a crime of world dimension"; "encouraging governments to ensure means for transnational cooperation between the police, local authorities and non-governmental organizations, to really fight this crime"; proposing "economic alternatives to exploitation of highly vulnerable groups"; "ensuring a safe and sustainable work environment to the victims of the trade, who left their family-houses or the centres where they were given hospitality". Caritas Europe invites also to concentrate studies within "demand" and on the profiles of the traffickers. Caritas Europe is a network of 49 organizations in 44 countries.
