SIR EUROPA: STRASBOURG PARLIAMENT DISCUSSES THE OUTCOME OF THE LISBON SUMMIT

The results of the summit of the heads of state and government of the 27 member states, which took place in Lisbon, comes back on the EU’s agenda. The EU Parliament, that will gather in a plenary session from 22nd to 25th October, will review the results of the meeting on Tuesday 23rd, in the presence of the current president of the EU Council, José Socrates, and the president of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso. The aim is to see "whether the Parliament’s requests have been granted"; a note from the Assembly suggests that the distribution of the seats might have to be renegotiated. The first item on the agenda is a review of the report on nuclear energy and its uses, "decisions on which will have to be taken by the member states". The report "highlights its advantages for the diversification of the energy sources and the fight against climate change", although it states that "fossil energy sources are still necessary". Another report being reviewed by Parliament asks for "rules to ban smoking in confined environments all over the Union", "making manufacturers responsible for health damage". Then Parliament will first read the balance for 2008 and (on Wednesday 24th) will hold a debate on the relations between the EU and Turkey and the progress of the accession negotiations.
