SIR EUROPA: BARROSO (EU COMMISSION), "EURO-SCEPTICS DEFEATED BY THE LISBON SUMMIT" (2)

As to the globalisation report presented by the EU Commission in Lisbon, which was praised by the 27 heads of state and government, Barroso adds: "The principle of the fifth freedom has been accepted in Europe. It means freedom of movement for research workers and knowledge", which is essential "for the Europe of the future, which intends to keep up with the globalisation of the processes". Such report had been commissioned by the EU Council and will be further discussed at the December summit. "In this way, we mean to show that, once the Treaty has been approved, Europe will not stop, actually it is already looking ahead – specifies Barroso -. And the future means the economy of knowledge, the progress of research, competitiveness, more social cohesion, the quality of work and the respect of the environment". "The spirit of Lisbon must be kept alive", concluded Barroso, "as it led to launching the Treaty". A spirit which is now to be applied "to the reality of the problems that concern the citizens, who expect a strong Europe, which can deliver results and responses to their expectations".
