SIR EUROPE: CCEE ASSEMBLY; CARD. O’CONNOR, "THE ENGLISH GOVERNMENT IS ALSO REALIZING THE COSTS" OF SEPARATIONS AND DIVORCES

"The English government is also realizing the economical and social costs of separations and divorces. This awareness is generating the necessity of stronger support to families". It was stated by Card. Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, archbishop of Westminster and president of the Bishops’ Conference in England and Wales, alongside the assembly of the presidents of the European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE), which is taking place in Fatima right on the family subject. "It is not simply pragmatism – stated the cardinal; – it’s a matter of conscience awakened in the light of the costs and the negative results caused by family breaks to the English society. It is also necessary to recall that the weakening of the family is the worrisome sign of the weakening of our culture". "Moreover, we must not forget the suffering of the children of separated or divorced couples – added the archbishop of Westminster; – to realize that, it would be enough to speak about that with teachers". "To face this situation – concluded Card. Murphy-O’Connor, – it is urgent and necessary to create conditions for higher support to the family by public institutions. In this respect, the commitment of the Church, with its specific proposal, is one of the most important".
