60 thousand Iraqis are forced out of their homes every year because of relentless violence. In September 2007, there were over 4 million Iraqi refugees, and 2.2 million of them were within the borders of the country, about 1.5 million in Syria, over 500 thousand in Jordan, and 200 thousand in the Gulf countries. As well as in Egypt, Iran, Lebanon and Turkey. They were one million until 2003. These figures are contained in the statistic dossier of Unhcr, the UN Agency for Refugees, for September 2007. However, according to Unhcr, "the possibility for the neighbouring countries to receive such big numbers of refugees is on the brink of collapse. Visa restrictions have already been enforced and, if they increase, this would raise more problems for Iraqis looking for a safe area. Iraqis are those who more than any other population applied for asylum to the industrialised countries, 22.200 in 2006 and as many as 19.800 in the first six months of 2007. Sweden is the country which has received most applications (9329), followed by Greece (3483) and Germany (817). As of 1st January 2007, Iraqi refugees in Germany were 36.200, 22 thousand in the United Kingdom, 21.800 in Holland, 23.600 in Sweden. In the USA, they are 19.800. Despite this, 95% of Iraqi refugees are still in the Middle East".
