"Only through a common and shared commitment it is possible to meet the great challenge of our time, that is, building a world of peace and justice, in which every man may live with dignity. This may happen if a world model of real solidarity prevails, capable of assuring all the people living on the Planet food, water and the necessary medical treatments, as well as work and energy resources, cultural heritage, scientific and technological knowledge". Yesterday, with those words, before starting to recite the Angelus prayer, Benedict XVI recalled the actuality of St Martin, bishop of Tours, mentioned by the Church on November 11th. The Pope recalled the famous "brotherly charity act" of the saint when he was still a soldier, that is, the gift of his mantle to a poor man. "St Martin’s charitable gesture he stated is part of the very logic which fostered Jesus to multiply bread for the hungry crowd, but above all, to leave himself as food for mankind in the Eucharist, the supreme sign of God’s love, Sacramentum Caritatis. It is the logic of sharing, through which our love for our neighbour is expressed in an authentic way".
