SIR EUROPA: KOSOVO, MGR. GJERGJI (APOSTOLIC ADM.), SERBIANS AND ALBANIANS TOGETHER TO BUILD THE FUTURE

"The election has been a gift for our country. We have proven we are responsible for and willing to build a future in a democratic manner and to pursue peace and cohabitation for everyone, Serbians and Albanians who live here". With these words, spoken to SIR, the apostolic administrator to Kosovo, mgr. Dode Gjergji, comments the results of the polls in the country that has seen the victory of the Pdk, so far the opposition party, of the former Kosovari guerrilla leader Hashim Taci. However, mgr. Gjergji does not fail to express his "sadness" for "the low turnout", especially "that of the Serbian minority. A choice that makes one sad". About this, the apostolic administrator states that "we need to patiently go on, convincing the Serbians not to be bound to the past but to look ahead. The Kosovari residents of Serbian origins want to live with the rest of the population. Nevertheless, they are affected by external pressures that do not let them to. There is no wall between Serbians and Albanians here in Kosovo, but political reasons make this cohabitation problematic". In this journey towards "democracy and Europe", the Church, he concludes, "will not fail to give its contribution to the building of a free country".
