BENEDICT XVI: APPEAL FOR SOMALIA, "FIND PEACEFUL SOLUTIONS"

” “An appeal to find "peaceful solutions" and bring "aids" to the "beloved population" of Somalia was made today by Benedict XVI at the end of his catechesis in Saint Peter’s Square. The political and humanitarian crisis has actually escalated in Somalia, with hundreds of civilians killed in just a few weeks and one million people evacuated from the inland, 200,000 of whom left the capital, Mogadishu, in the last two weeks. "Painful news arrive about the uncertain humanitarian condition of Somalia, especially in Mogadishu, increasingly affected by social insecurity and poverty – said the Pope today –. I follow with trepidation the development of the events and I appeal to all those who have political responsibilities, on a local and global scale, that peaceful solutions may be found and aids may be brought to that beloved population". Benedict XVI ended his speech by encouraging also "the efforts of those who, although in insecurity and difficulty, remain in that region to rescue and bring aids to the population". Last Friday, a drifting bullet had killed a humanitarian worker as she was helping distributing aids.” “
