SIR EUROPA: SWISS CHURCH, TURNING THE 2008 EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CUP INTO A FEAST

Making the 2008 European Football Cup not only a sporting event, but also a feast of living together. This is the proposal submitted by the Catholic Church and the Federation of Protestant Churches in Switzerland (Feps) – the country which, along with Austria, will play host to the 13th European Football Championship (7-29 June, 2008) –, with the project called "Church 08–2008 – always on the line". "As a Church, we have been in the ‘game’ for 2008 years – said today the president of Feps, Thomas Wipf –. This is about sharing with people our enthusiasm for football as well as being ready for their existential and social needs". The campaign is supported by the Federal Council for Euro 2008, the manager of which, Benedikt Weibel, stated that "if this campaign by the Churches makes people reflect on such values as the respect of human beings and human rights, we will be happy". The logo of the campaign will be a football scarf with "Church 2008" written on it, which will be displayed all over the 8 Swiss cities that will play host to the matches. In the churches, priests, deacons and collaborators will be at the disposal of the teams, the managers and the fans. Other campaigns include ecumenical rites, a friendly match between teams of religious communities, and a centre in Zurich where the 800 volunteers will be able to spend time in silence and rest. Another website has also been planned.
