"Now more than ever went on the Pope , the human family needs to find the weapons and strategies that will overcome the conflicts caused by social differences, ethnical rivalries and the big gap between different levels of economic development". Hence the need of the "contribution of every member of society individuals, volunteer organisations, businessmen, local and national governments" starting from those "ethical and moral principles that are the common heritage of all peoples". "Mankind is longing for a true, lasting peace", warned the Pope, according to whom "technical progress, although important, is not everything", but must be put "in the broader context of the integral good of the human being". Only a reference to this "common heritage of values" "can actually inspire factual initiatives, targeted to a fairer distribution of spiritual and material assets". The work carried out by FAO, recalled the Pope, as he expressed his "appreciation" of the organisation, is based on the "relation between the spreading of poverty and denied access to the basic human rights, starting from the fundamental rights to appropriate food". "Peace, prosperity and the respect of human rights are inseparably connected", concluded the Pope, according to whom "the time has come to make sure, for the sake of peace, that no man, woman or child will ever be hungry again".
