BENEDICT XVI: TO THE NEW CARDINALS; "FOR CHRIST, WE ARE ALL BROTHERS" (3)

In the wake of the Second Vatican Council, Paul VI, John Paul I and John Paul II, went on Benedict XVI, "have been the true heralds of Christ’s royalty in the contemporary world. And it is comforting for me to always be able to rely on you to accomplish myself such fundamental task of Peter’s ministry". Another aspect is closely related to this mission: "peace between all the disciples of Christ, as a sign of the peace that Jesus has come to establish in the world". "The Church – commented the Pope – is that portion of humankind in which Christ’s royalty already manifests itself, the privileged manifestation of which is peace. It is the new Jerusalem, still imperfect because it is a pilgrim in history, but able to somehow foreshadow the heavenly Jerusalem". And it is just in Jerusalem that one can recognise "the figure of the Church, the sacrament of Christ and of His Kingdom". Therefore, let the prayer for peace and unity "constitute" for the cardinals the "first and foremost mission, so that the Church may be ‘firm and united", a sign and a means of unity for all of humankind". Finally, the Pope entrusted to Mary "the new cardinals, the Cardinal’s College and the whole Catholic community, busy sowing in the furrows of history the Kingdom of Christ, the Lord of Life and the prince of peace".
