AFRICA-EUROPE: BISHOPS’ MESSAGE TO THE LISBON SUMMIT, "AGAINST THE SLAVERY OF OUR AGE (3)

To the governments of Europe and African, the bishops recommend "to practice good governance, honesty, accountability and transparency, the promotion of democracy, education for everyone, the respect of the laws and the fight against corruption". Finally, the bishops recall that "immigrants contribute to the development of the destination countries and their remittances play a substantial economic role for the wellbeing of their families in their native countries". "As bishops – they state –, we think that a warm, friendly welcome to foreigners is a fundamental value for all of mankind and is in agreement with the message of the Gospel". The message encloses a 7-page technical document drawn up by the Department for Justice, Peace, Development and Good Governance of Secam, used to draw up the final declaration.
