IMMIGRATION: MGR. ROBU (PRESIDENT OF RUMANIAN BISHOPS), "HOPE TALKS BETWEEN AUTHORITIES MAY BE SUCCESSFUL"

"I hope the contacts that there will be between the Rumanian and Italian authorities may be successful and solve this predicament. Friendship between our peoples is well known. Unfortunately this tense climate does not do much for dialogue". This is the wish that, in an interview with SIR, is expressed by the Metropolitan archbishop of Bucharest, Ioan Robu, president of the Rumanian Bishops Conference, just after the murder of Giovanna Reggiani and the political debate that begun in Italy and in Romania about immigration. The archbishop has a word for everyone. "The Rumanian population – he says – must be able to appreciate Italy’s reception and respect the rules of cohabitation of the host people, offering guaranteed working skills and honesty". "On their part, Rumanians too need guarantees in terms of a regular job and a dignified salary that may enable them to live well enough. Of course the Rumanian authorities must do much more for their population through social assistance policies so as to prevent them leaving their country in such huge numbers. The wave has gone by now, but something must be done even now that it is a bit late, because immigration has not been controlled and any excess causes problems". (continued)
