ECUMENISM: THE "GLOBAL CHRISTIAN FORUM" IN NAIROBI, 240 REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL THE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES

The Global Christian Forum is taking place in Limuru (Nairobi, Kenya). From November 6th to 9th, it is gathering 240 representatives of all the Christian traditions, coming from all over the world. The subject of the meeting – promoted by the World Council of Churches, starting from an idea launched by Pastor Konrad Raiser in the nineties – is "Our pilgrimage with Jesus Christ, the Peacemaker": "the participants – said the World Council of Churches – are discussing about how to better promote dialogue and cooperation" among Churches, for "a common token in the world". Half the participants come from the Evangelical and Pentecostal Churches. The others represent the Anglican and Protestant Churches (about sixty), and the Orthodox Churches (25). The delegation of the Catholic Church is made up of about twenty people. Apart from the Pontifical Council for the unity of the Christians, there is also Msgr. Aldo Giordano from CCEE (Council of European Bishops’ Conferences). "I hope – said the secretary general of WCC, Samuel Kobia, – that the meeting of Nairobi may contribute to creating new links between us and our Churches". Today, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, sent a message to the Forum. "Our vocation to unity and common account expects us to create new grounds for dialogue, on the basis of the brotherhood which is already characterizing our lives".
