SIR EUROPE: KYPRIANOU (COMMISSION), “400 THOUSAND CHILDREN RISK OBESITY"

One thousand schools and about twenty thousand children: those are the figures, made known by the Commission, concerning the participation in the European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking, celebrated all over the European Union on November 8th. "In Europe, obesity is increasing, above all, among children – said the health commissioner, Markos Kyprianou, on launching the event -. Every year, in the EU, over 400 thousand children start suffering from overweight and obesity problems. It is up to each of us to fight this trend". During the day, the chefs of Euro-Toques International (an association that is present in 17 countries) will visit schools "for practical activities with children, or will invite one class to their restaurants to dine and to discuss about healthy cooking". The Commission and Euro-Toques International manage also European Mini Chefs (http://eu.mini-chefs.eu), website for children "which intends to pay a contribution to the fight against children obesity by encouraging healthy habits in nutrition". The site includes a forum for parents, teachers and children, dedicated to healthy cooking. Moreover, "it proposes simple recipes and cooking suggestions by some of the best chefs in Europe".
