ECUMENISM: NEW REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ARCHBISHOPRIC OF CANTERBURY APPOINTED AT THE HOLY SEE ” “” “

Yesterday, the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, announced the appointment of David Richardson as representative of the archbishop at the Holy See, as well as director of the Anglican Centre in Rome. David Richardson – it was written in a note made known by the Anglican Communion yesterday – is dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne, in Australia, and follows John Flack, a bishop who’s going to leave his office next February 29th. Richardson is taking office after Easter. On congratulating him for the appointment, Archbishop Williams underlined the importance of this role because it is part of a ten-year (by now) history of "dialogue between Anglicans and Roman Catholics". "This role will have to be played by following a spirit of witnessing and a sense of service, calling for a more effective collaboration between us, as Pope Benedict XVI and I stated in our Common Declaration last year". "I will do anything I can – said Richardson – to work with the Papal Council on the promotion of the unity of Christians, and with Lambeth Palace on the cause of the Gospel and our common ecumenical commitment. Through the work of the Anglican Centre, I will try to promote mutual understanding on any level, and in particular, in the fields with divergences of opinion, strengthening the links of affection and trust between our Communions".
