” “"Supplying an overview of European Union activities", in the sector of human rights, and checking community actions in third-party countries: it is one of the "strong points" – so called in Strasbourg – of today’s session of the European parliament. In the auditorium, the Portuguese presidency of the Council is going to illustrate the annual report on human rights for the period going from July 1st, 2006, to June 30th, 2007. In accordance with a note by the presidency, the text "analyzes developments within the Union, initiatives in third-party countries, a long series of specific questions, as well as issues relating to single countries". Among the "specific questions", the report concentrates on death penalty, children’s and women’s rights, human being trade, and on the problems linked with respect for rights relating to migrations, minorities, and the disabled. Specific observations concern violations of rights in lots of States, such as Turkey, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Byelorussia, Palestinian Territories, Libya, Russia and China. There were many references to lack of respect for religious freedoms, in both this report and other documents examined by the Assembly during this session, and dedicated to "the recrudescence of extremism in Europe" and to "respect for human rights in the actions meant to oppose terrorism".
