"God, the Father of all mankind says the text , You want us to be happy, You want no poverty to be amidst us, nor injustice or hatred, and You want Your love to bring us together in friendship. With joy, we look at the many European peoples who join each other, who wipe out all differences and look for everyone’s common good. We are proud and grateful that we too can be one of them". The prayer goes on to mention the six-month presidency: "we have been entrusted with guiding this great family of European peoples and we ask for Your help and Your blessing. Enlighten the rulers of the nations, the politicians and the members of Parliament, so that they will wisely and honestly pursue and opt for everyone’s good. That concern over economic and material progress will never obscure the spiritual values, which we need. That the pursuit of our wellbeing will not make us forget those people who need our help.
