SIR EUROPA: MGR. BETORI (ITALIAN BISHOPS), "HOPE IS FAR MORE THAN OPTIMISM" (3)

” “Ten years after the start of the cultural project of the Italian Church, mgr. Betori, answering the questions asked by the director of SIR, comments that, although that was "no easy path", the final balance "was positive, insofar as", as well as "taking root in the sphere of the widespread mentality, "it managed to support the capability of a Christianly-inspired interpretation of the issues that have been discussed by public opinion as well as boosting the concerted nature of the lay world" and "drew unceasing attention to the so-called anthropological issue". According to the secretary of the Italian Bishops Conference, "after the consolidation stage, now is the time for the rooting stage". Three priorities stand out: "a wider local spreading through local meetings and events, the search for new forms of involvement of the lay people, connections with the youth world". The latter raises a question that the Church must answer, bearing in mind that, with "Christ, man must not fear the outskirts of history and society", because faith "gives the certainty of being at the centre of God’s heart". But the Church must also address the educational emergency: which means "supporting the educational tasks of the families, formative courses in the parishes, the precious service rendered by Catholic teachers, Catholic schools and the teaching of religion".” “
