SIR EUROPA: DIMAS (ENVIRONMENT COMMISSIONER) ABOUT THE BALI CONFERENCE, RESPECT THE 2009 DEADLINE

"The only responsible reaction" to the environmental problems and climate change "is to do more worldwide to contain greenhouse gas emissions". Stavros Dimas, Environment Commissioner, repeats the EU’s positions on the topics that will be addressed by the UN Conference on climate that is in progress in Bali. In the Indonesian city, "a decision must be taken on the starting of negotiations towards an ambitious agreement on climate for the years after 2012, when the first term set out by the Kyoto Protocol will end". The EU Commission will directly monitor the Bali conference that will continue until December 14th, partly because "of the alarming assessment of climate change provided by Ipcc, the Intergovernmental group on climate change". The EU goes to the conference to ask to "fix 2009 as the deadline for completion of such negotiations" so as to finish all ratifications on time and enforce the new rules just after the Kyoto deadline. The factual proposals that Europe submits to the negotiation table include the "containment of global heating to max 2ºC above pre-industrial-age temperature" and "compulsory emission reduction in industrialised countries" up to 30% by 2020.” “
