The European Year 2008 offers us a precious opportunity to find ways to improve dialogue and relations" between the cultures of the old continent. The MEP Ján Figel’ presented in Brussels the plans and goals of the year that EU dedicates to exchanges of cultural expressions, traditions and religions in the 27-member EU. "At first sight, this task might seem extremely difficult, but 50 years ago the idea of bringing the different populations of our continent under the aegis of the EU seemed impossible to accomplish as well. Nowadays, we can see the results achieved by the European Union" and its "remarkable success in bringing different countries together. We can and we must, therefore, face the challenges of cultural and religious diversity in our continent". The slogan chosen for the next twelve months is: "Together in diversity". The goal of the European Year will be to "boost mutual understanding and cohabitation", and "the advantages of cultural diversity, of the citizens’ proactive involvement in the EU issues will be reviewed, and an attempt will be made to boost a feeling of belonging to Europe".
