EUROPE: EUROSTAT’S STATISTIC YEARBOOK GIVES A PICTUR OF THE 25-MEMBER EU

Four hundred plates, diagrams, maps, comments on the statistics and the EU policies, as well as comparisons with other non-EU countries, such as the United States and Japan. Eurostat’s Statistic Yearbook presented in Brussels gives a "picture" of the 25-member Europe, as it does not contain the figures of Bulgaria and Romania yet. The book, divided into 14 sections, takes stock of the situation in different areas, "including the population, education, health, lifestyle" in the member states as well as the "job market, economy, science, energy, the environment, farming and fishing". Looking through the figures, one can find out, for example, that over 40% of the EU population over 15 are overweight, while obesity affects one out of 10. The greatest problems in this respect are found amidst men; in particular, "about one half of adult males in Greece and Austria are overweight"; in Malta, a quarter of men are obese. The "education" section shows instead that "English is the foreign language studied by 85% of high-school students". The second most spoken language is French (23% of students), followed by German (17%). And again: the price of petrol "changes dramatically from one country to the other": while in Latvia the euro-super 95 lead-free petrol costs 0.83 euros per litre, the selling price of the same petrol in the Netherlands rises to 1.40 euros.
