EUROPE: THE EU OPENS THE ERC AND THE AGENCY FOR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS

Opportunities for study, openings, public events: the EU Commission announced the usual weekly work schedule that is starting today with a day about the "New social reality in Europe". The event is part of the "Project for the citizens – Delivering results for Europe" and includes the opening of a public consultation, the opening of a website and the presentation of a Eurobarometro survey at the Berlaymont, the Brussels’ Executive headquarters. The goal is to "arouse a widespread debate on the social reality" in the member states "and build new consensus on the common challenges". An event will be held in Berlin on 27th and 28th February for the opening of the European Research Council (ERC): "For the first time – explains a note from the EU Commission – the EU will have its own agency for the funding of science", of research and their applications. Covered by the Seventh Framework Program, the ERC will be endowed with a budget of 7.5 billion euros for the period 2007-2013. The Berlin conference will be attended by commissioner Janez Potoènik and the president of ERC, Fotis C. Kafatos. Thursday 1st March will be the day of the Agency of Fundamental Rights, which will begin to work in the Vienna headquarters, in the presence of the president, José Manuel Barroso.
