EUROPE: A "YOUTH SUMMIT" TOO TO CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNOVERSARY OF THE EU

” “"The 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome certainly deserves to be celebrated, and we are glad the peace project called Europe has reached this goal; at the same time, we are aware of the need to move beyond the sentimental side of such celebrations and look to the real future of the European project". Bettina Schwarzmayr, President of the European Youth Forum, is one of the organisers of the "Youth summit", due to be held in Rome on March 24th and 25th 2007. The Eu institutions invited two hundred boys and girls, under 30 years of age, to take part in times of discussion, study and the sharing of experiences that will be an integral part of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the EEC Treaty. In this period, a small group of boys and girls from the 27 member states are preparing the event and developing a thought-provoking document that "will help steer the debates that will be held in the next few weeks, on a national level, across the Eu". The preparations can be followed on the website www.europa.eu/50, an area that Brussels specially set up for the Eu birthday celebrations. The summit’s debates will focus on several issues (The Constitution; the European social model; sustainable development; education within the EU). The summit’s final message will be relayed to the heads of state and government, gathered in Berlin on March 25th to adopt a Declaration on the future of Europe.” “
