EUROPE: AGREEMENT TO PROTECT CHILDREN USING CELLPHONES

On the occasion of the fourth "Safer Internet Day", an agreement has been signed in Brussels under the aegis of the EU Commission for protecting children who use cellphones. "It is – explained the Commissioner for telecommunications, Viviane Reding – a response to the results of the public consultation conducted by the Commission on the protection of children who use mobile phones", which have been published today. "Under this agreement, mobile phone operators undertake to develop a self-regulation code by February 2008". According to Reding, this is "an important step forward in the protection of children", and the Executive "will closely monitor the actual implementation of the document". The about fifteen European operators who have endorsed the initiative undertake, in particular, to support: "the control of access to adult contents; awareness-raising campaigns for children and parents; rating of commercial contents and, under national regulations, of decorum and suitability; the fight against illegal contents spread through cellphones".
