POLAND: "AD GENTES", ON 4TH MARCH FUND-RAISING FOR DARFUR AND AFRICAN COUNTRIES

” “A fund-raising campaign for Darfur (Sudan) and the other African countries where children are starving to death: it is promoted, on Sunday 4th March in all the churches of Poland, by the charity "Ad Gentes" of the Polish Church. The president of the Commission for Missionary Work of the Polish Bishops Conference, mgr. Wiktor Skworc, mentioned, in his appeal for the fund raising, that, due to the continuation of the conflict in Sudan, "there have been over 400 thousand victims; 2 million people had to leave their homes and take shelter elsewhere, and hundreds of thousands of inhabitants who have remained in the destroyed villages, gathered in refugee camps, suffer and die for the lack of bread and water". In 2006, the fund raising for the missionaries, that was organised in Poland on the second Lenten Sunday, raised nearly 500 thousand euros, which went to aids for the populations of Africa, Latin America, Asia and Oceania. The charity "Ad Gentes" of the Polish Church was founded in response to Benedict XVI’s appeal to the Polish Bishops who had gone on a visit ad limina in December 2005, in which the Pope had asked them "to urge" your Polish priests "to set out on a missionary service", ensuring them "spiritual support and appropriate material assistance".” “
