In a day of work that stood out for the discussion of the Berlin Declaration (to be approved on 25th March during the 50th anniversary of the Rome Treaties), the Strasbourg Parliament launched a message about the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. In the run-up to the third session of the preparatory committee for the revision of the non-proliferation treaty (NPT), due to take place in Vienna from 30th April to 11th May, the European Parliament passed a resolution that will be submitted to the Council and Commission according to which the NPT "is the cornerstone of the global regime of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons". The document is advocated by nearly all the political groups of the European Parliament. In particular, the MEPs ask for "a coordinated, factual and tangible Europe-wide contribution to the revision of the Treaty". This means "ratifying the prohibition of producing fissile materials and expediting the signing and ratification of the Treaty about the Total Ban on Nuclear Tests". The recent cases of Iran and Korea have reawakened attention: this is partly why the European Parliament "urges controls over exports and controls at the borders to reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism". In addition they urge the States that are infringing the non-proliferation regime to put an end "to their incautious and irresponsible behaviour".
