In Hungary, over one thousand Catholic, Lutheran and Calvinist young people are taking part these days in the ecumenical initiative called "An uncompromising 72 hours", offering up 30,000 hours’ volunteer work in hundreds of social and charity projects. From 16th to 18th March, the young Hungarians are going to prove "that solidarity and the protection of the environment, as well as being useful, can also be fun", comments Magyar Kurír, the agency that relayed the news. The morning of 16th, the opening was celebrated in several cities: for instance, in Debrecen, the volunteers worked in a building that had been destroyed by a fire. The young people will go visit old people, refugees, children in institutes or hospitals, organising programs and excursions; they will help tidy up the environment; they will tend to gardens, playgrounds; they will make food and will distribute it to the poor and the homeless; they will paint fences and gates; they will plant trees. The end of the three days will also be marked by parties and meetings, with moments of prayer and thanksgiving. The initiative has been organised by the Ecumenical youth office and by young people from the Catholic, Lutheran and Calvinist Churches.
