EUROPE: POTOCNIK (EU COMMISSION), "SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT, A CHALLENGE FOR THE EU"

"We have to firmly face the challenge of sustainable transport". Janez Potoènik, EU commissioner for science and research, gives the alert on both "mobility" and environmental respect by submitting two research projects that are to be addressed by an international conference held today and tomorrow in Milan. The subject is: "Transport and the environment: a global challenge. Technological and political solutions". "Transport within the EU produces about one third of the toxic substances and CO2 in the atmosphere – goes on the Slovenian commissioner –, and this proportion is going to dramatically increase unless we take action now. These projects are one step forward in the right direction". The first project, called Traenvia, "will review and compare the environmental and socio-economical impact of different means of transport along corridor V, from Lisbon to Kiev". The second one is the "Research project for reduction of atmospheric pollution in Lombardy", "focussed on particulates and on how to reduce emissions in this region of Italy". Both projects are coordinated by the General management of the Common Research Centre "and fall within the EU Commission’s measures to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gases".
