EUROPE: VAN DER LINDEN (PACE), "ADOPTING ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS"

” “"For the millions of people across the world that aspire to a better life, Europe is the land of human rights, of values and opportunities. But for many people, the reality is far different: Europe is synonym with harassment by the authorities that want to repatriate them, discrimination on the workplace, xenophobia and intolerance". René van der Linden, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (Pace), spoke today, the International Day of the elimination of racial discrimination, established in 1966 by the United Nations. According to the president of PACE, the governments "should adopt and enforce a legislation that bans the instigation to hatred, violence or discrimination". It is followed by a message to the mass-media: "In the fight against populism, hostility and fear, the media decisively contribute to show in an objective manner the problems of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. It is the media’s responsibility therefore to show the positive contribution that these people make to society and protect them from stereotypes". In addition, the media "should abstain from revealing the ethnical origin or nationality of immigrants that have been arrested or condemned for breaches of the law, when such information is not relevant to the facts".” “
