50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: "REPORT OF THE SAGES" TO COMECE; MGR. VAN LUYN, "MORE TRANSPARENT DIALOGUE ON THE NATURE OF THE EU"

” “When France and Holland rejected the Constitutional Treaty, "a new chapter opened up in the history of the European unification, the continuation of which", without the consent of the majority of the citizens of the EU member states, "looks more uncertain than ever". But in order to take "a sensible decision" about the future course of the Union, we must define "what the Union is". It was said this morning in Rome by mgr. Adrianus van Luyn, president of Comece, as he spoke at the press conference for the presentation of the congress "Values and prospects for the Europe of tomorrow. The 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome" that Comece promotes in the capital of Italy from tomorrow (until 25th March). In addition, mgr. Van Luyn submitted the "Report of the Committee of the Sages" to Comece, called "A Europe of values. The ethical dimension of the European Union", that will be illustrated at the opening of the congress and will provide inspiration for the discussion and development of the "Message of Rome" to the European Council, that will be proclaimed on 24th March and handed over to the Italian Prime Minister, Romano Prodi. Mgr. Van Luyn expressed the wish that the "Report" may "kick-start a more transparent, higher-level dialogue on the nature of the EU and its goals amidst Christians and all the citizens in general". ” “
