The European Union needs more politics". Simon Hix, professor at the London School of Economics, gave in the morning the first report of the meeting, called "What does Europe need?", promoted by the European Parliament and by the assemblies of the member states to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaties that established the EEC. The meeting, which includes a first day at the European University of Fiesole (Florence) and a second session in Rome tomorrow, has been introduced by Yves Mény, president of the Institute, and by Fausto Bertinotti, president of the Chamber of Deputies (Italy). "More politics is needed explained Hix to move beyond the common market, to mediate between the conflicts generated by the economic reforms, as well as to make the citizens understand what the goals that the EU pursue are, and what solutions they are going to adopt to respond to the citizens’ needs". "All this includes the need to find some trans-national alignments, different positions between right and left. A true policy of alternate government specified the expert from the London School of Economics that will materialise during the campaigns for the election of the Strasbourg Parliament, something that currently does not happen, because on such occasions the parties only speak of their own domestic issues".
