THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: "REPORT OF THE SAGES" TO COMECE; MAY VALUES REMAIN "THE FOUNDATION OF OUR COMMON ENTERPRISE"

” “"The European Union was not born by chance. It is the fruit of a very specific will and is as weak as any human enterprise can be. Nowadays it is looking for a way of its own. It must become more aware of the strength that is at the heart of the values it represents". This was written in the conclusions of "A Europe of values. The ethical dimension of the European Union", the Report of the Committee of the Sages established by Comece, which was presented in Rome this morning. "The dignity of the person and human rights, peace, freedom, democracy, tolerance, the respect of diversity and subsidiarity, the pursuit of the common good": these are, according to the Sages, the values that the EU represents. "Fundamental values" that "are not improvised issues", but are deeply rooted "in two thousand years of Christian tradition as well as in the traditions of other faiths and philosophies. Those values and that tradition – conclude the Sages – are as powerful today as they were in the past, and they must remain the foundation of our common enterprise, that we have to pursue with consistent and firm leadership. Then the European project" will be once again for the citizens a "true and lasting cause for pride and a pillar of hope for the future". (to be continued)” “
