” “"A nice aspect that emerged over these days: a shared feeling about the challenges that await Europe today within the entire Church: the bishops, God’s people, the organisations, the many politicians that are working hard as Christians in the building of the European Union". It was said by Andrea Olivero, national president of Acli (Italian Workers’ Christian Associations), as he outlined the results of the congress that has been promoted in Rome over these days by Comece. "As one can argue from the Message to the Council of Europe that has been submitted today – adds Olivero -, there’s increasing attention to the subject of the identity of the Europe we want, as well as to the real needs of the people of our nations and in particular of the new peoples that have joined the EU". In particular, "over these years such subjects as the protection of life, of the family, of civil rights, that are not the same within the Union today, have become important". Then, according to Olivero, "we must question again those elements of the Christian origins of the EU that have been deliberately left out by some, but that in truth are resurfacing again because they are vital sources without which we cannot build the future".
