THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: COMECE CONGRESS; OLIVERO (ITALY), "IT MUST BUILD BRIDGES" (2)

” “Olivero then commented that "the search for a compromise as a sensible point of balance between the different values borne by the European peoples must not endanger the fundamental values of man, as the Pope reminded us, because otherwise, instead of choosing the common good, we will find the common evil". "We, lay people, are responsible – he goes on – for accounting for our values in all spheres, broadening the spaces of dialogue while remaining firm in our values". We should also avoid "opposing one view of the States and the Churches as independent elements, that is, a secularism based on the distance between the event of faith and the event of politics". "As committed lay people – stated Olivero –, we have to give Europe a new project, not let it withdraw into itself: the limit of the latest period of the EU was its focussing only on the wellbeing of our continent". To bring the European citizens close to the EU again, "we have to keep in mind, as the Pope said, that Europe was born for the world, with the task of bringing peace and building bridges. That’s the only way for it to become an entity with a heart of its own". "As social organisations – he concluded –, we have to try to bring in the limelight of politics a Europe that does not only aim at preserving what already exists but a Europe that is cast into a braver international role for the future".” “
