THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: COMECE CONGRESS; PAUL (FINLAND), "ETHICAL VALUES REVIVED, A SOUND FOUNDATION" TO MOVE ON

"A hugely relevant event" that, "by bringing up the social issue of Europe, which is usually scarcely talked about, as priority is given to political and economical issues", revived "the ethical values that are its foundations. Nowadays, in order to continue the European integration process, we need a sound foundation, based on Christianity and on these values". This is the result of the congress promoted by Comece on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, which is ending tomorrow, as outlined to SIR by Jan-Peter Paul, professor at Helsinki University. With reference to his own country, Paul states that "the European project is regarded by the majority of Finns as the pragmatic solution to several problems. Even the elections of 18th March confirmed Finland’s scarce interest in the political debate for the European issue; the EU is taken for granted and does not arise any particular enthusiasm". Hence the importance of reviving the project and the values that underlie it. Appreciation also for the Pope’s speech at the audience of this morning: "Benedict XVI is a true blessing for us; a great builder that is perfectly aware of the foundations on which the building of Europe can continue".
