THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: YOUTH SUMMIT; WALLSTROM (DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF THE EU COMMISSION), "YOU ARE THE FUTURE" OF THE EU

” “"You, boys and girls, are the future of Europe: you are the workers, the businessmen, the artists, the teachers and the politicians of tomorrow". With these words, Margot Wallström, deputy president of the European Commission, welcomed today the 200 boys and girls from all over Europe who gathered in Rome for the first European Youth Summit, called "Your Europe, your future", on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. The deputy president of the EU Commission urged the young Europeans to be "impatient", meaning to be wanting to "broaden their horizon to embark on a project that will go beyond their personal careers". A public project then, aimed at high ambitions. "To Europe – she specified – we cannot only take a retrospective approach, but we must place ourselves in a global perspective". "For decades – she recalled – the world leaders have promised to eradicate poverty and hunger", but "they, or we should say, we have failed": millions of people still "have no access to drinkable water or education". But "when the world leaders fail, you must succeed", said Wallström to the young people present: it is important therefore not to forget that there is "another part of the world that is devastated by the wars and by the abuse of human rights".
