THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: BERLIN DECLARATION, THE HUMAN BEING AT THE CENTRE OF THE INTEGRATION PROCESS

"The EU enables us to accomplish our common ideals: for us the human being is at the centre. Its dignity is inviolable. The first chapter of the Berlin Declaration is about the reference values in the integration process. "We aspire to peace and freedom – reads the text –, to democracy and the constitutional state, to mutual respect and the taking of responsibility, to wellbeing and security, to tolerance and participation, to justice and solidarity". Unity in diversity is another milestone of the document. The second chapter is about the common tasks that the EU should fulfil with the community method: "We are facing big challenges that do not stop at the national borders. The European Union is our response to such challenges". The list of common problems includes the interconnection of the economies, competitiveness on the international markets, the protection of the European social model, the fight against terrorism, racims and xenophobia, and the fight against climate change. "We commit ourselves to finding peaceful solutions to the conflicts in the world"; and then: "We want to reduce poverty, hunger and disease". (to be continued)
