ITALIAN BISHOPS: NOTE BY THE PERMANENT COUNCIL ON THE FAMILY AND THE LAW INITIATIVES ON CIVIL UNIONS

"The legalization of civil unions" is "unacceptable on a principle level; it is dangerous on the social and educational level"; it would have dangerous effects on the family because it would deprive "the marriage pact of its uniqueness, which alone justifies the rights of spouses, which belong just to them". It is written in the Note of the Permanent Council of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, made known today. "An even more serious problem – pointed out the bishops, – would be the legalization of civil unions of people of the same sex, because, in this case, one would deny sexual difference, which is insuperable".
