"To increasingly pursue the European ideal, not only as geographic and cultural unification, but also as internal efficiency, and efficiency on the international level in relation to the fulfilment of a historical task", the Association for the Foundation Europe (AFE), during the Congress set up by COMECE (Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community) on the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, stated a few conditions. The preliminary one is respect for all the cultures and traditions which built up Europe as it is. Now Europe is watched with hope by lots of less lucky countries in the south of the world. Those countries are waiting for an action in favour of balance and civilization". This "involves the achievement of a necessary and real laity of Institutions, neglecting hostile or excluding positions, thus taking on positions of attention and dialogue with all the cultures and traditions, including the culture which is the heir of the those values, the Christian values, making up the most precious heritage of European humanism". "Any kinds of ‘missed attention’, or even discrimination of any culture, including religious cultures, are actually a ‘defect’ for democratic life". According to AFE, a contribution to dialogue may come from the Third European Ecumenical Assembly which is going to take place in Sibiu, in September, and which is oriented towards "the uneasy, but constant and common search for truth".
