"After just one year, .eu has become a constant presence in the European cyberspace. This is a positive signal: within community Europe, electronic commerce is attractive": Viviane Reding, commissioner for information society commented the data presented in Brussels, relating to the Internet dominion ".eu", which achieved its first year of public operation (it had been opened in April 2005 just for economic operators). In the last 12 months, "over 2.5 million dominion names were recorded", said the Luxembourg commissioner. The citizens and the enterprises "of all the 27 Member States asked for a .eu dominion name during its first operating year", but the highest demand came from Germany (31%), the United Kingdom (17%) and the Low Countries (12%). "During the climax stage of requests, in April 2006, 76 dominion names a second were recorded". To illustrate the success of the European dominion, Reding explained that "the .eu suffix is more and more used by famous brands such as AirFrance, Versace, Dexia, Milka and Greenpeace. Several non-European enterprises with a remarkable trade presence in Europe, such as Lexus and Sony, also began to use" such dominion "in their advertising campaigns".
