EUROPE: IN STRASBOURG, THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AGAINST TERRORISM

"Strengthening the legal grounds against terrorism, protecting fundamental rights, fighting the root causes of terrorism". These are the three major scopes of action that the Council of Europe declares in the run-up to the conference: "Terrorism, why?", scheduled on 25th and 26th at the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg. The CoE intends to "gain an insight of the conditions that push some people to embrace extremism" and violence, and "find new answers to fight such phenomena". According to the promoters, the conference will be focussed on three subjects: "the search for a balance between integration and the respect of cultural diversity, and the role of inter-religious dialogue"; "the need for a responsible foreign policy and governance"; the social and cultural root causes of terrorism. The speakers will include Peter Lizák, president of the Security Committee at the OECD, and Anatoly Safonov, special delegate of the president of the Russian Federation for the fight against organised trans-national crime. As well as experts from the 46 member states, the meeting will be attended by other international organisations, such as the UN, the EU, Eurojust, Interpol.
